Now-classic 512pp. "how to" text on making medieval armour, with more than 600 photographs! The first edition sold more than 20,000 copies, was Paladin Press's best-selling title for many years, and helped to launch the modern renaissance in medieval armour reproduction. In the words of Anton Antoshyny, “Thank you. Three guys are in fact guilty of this fact [the rise of armourers in Eastern Europe]: J.R.R. Tolkien, John Howe, and you.”
When Paladin Press went out of business in 2017, very few copies of TOMAR were left, and the rights reverted to me. I, in turn, was approached by a number of publishers, going with Echo Point, but I knew the book was in need of updating since it had been, at that time, twenty-two some years since it had released. At the very least, suppliers had changed and the advance of the Internet era changed communities. By Summer, 2025 I had finally completed the revisions, and here is the result.
Techniques of Medieval Armour Reproduction, 2nd edition, published now by Echo Point Books. Copies purchased through me here will be signed, of course! While the techniques within have not changed much, the communities making and fighting in armour have changed, as have suppliers. Much advance has been made on the cloth foundations for fighting harness, and many of these are captured within. Many of today's leading armourers are included also, having generously provided images of their work and answers to interview questions.
The book is slightly larger than the first edition, but still has more than 600 photographs. It's not a small book! Release is scheduled for end of November, 2025, in both hardcover (hurray - there has been a lot of interest in this in recent years!) and softcover. Price includes domestic US shipping via Media Mail.
