The fascinus (or fascinum) is a depiction of the Holy Phallus from Roman mythology. It is said, at least by Pliny, that the fascinus is a remedy for the "Evil Eye", otherwise, protection from outside influences that may be malevolent. It's the word from which the English "Fascinate" is derived, meaning "To bewitch, to enthrall, to consume or command the attention of", and its purpose is to protect from fascination, or bewitching. Archaeological evidence shows us that the charm was often given to children, usually in the form of a small ring, and appears to have been more commonly worn by children than by adults. It was believed that the strong emotion evoked by the sacred image, be it humor or shame, was itself the power that averted the Evil Eye. Either way, always be protected by the power of laughter (or grumpy glances) with your very own fascinus.
