Era & Region: High to Late Medieval Europe, c. 1320-1390
Primary Material: 100% Medium-Weight Fulled Wool
Colours: Indigo, Burgundy, others available

This product is meticulously patterned after the ubiquitous medieval hood, one of the most common and versatile garments of the 14th century. Visible in manuscripts, effigies, and the frescoes of the era—from the Luttrell Psalter to the tales of Chaucer—it was worn by all classes, from plowmen to princes. Our design is based on extant patterns derived from archaeological finds (Museum of London collection, etc)and tailored to provide a perfect balance of historical accuracy and wearable comfort.

The key features are:

  • The Integrated Hood & Collar: Carefully cut to drape naturally over the head and shoulders, providing superior protection from the elements.

  • Fabric: We use a robust, 100% wool in a 2/2 twill weave. This is a historically accurate fabric choice that offers superior durability, water resistance, and breathability. The felled fabric provides a smooth finish with minimal pilling.

  • As Worn: Don it as a standard hood for immediate warmth and weather protection.

  • The "Hatted" Look: By twisting the hood around your head and draping the liripipe, you can create the fashionable "bourrelet" or hat-like style that became the precursor to the dedicated chaperon hat of the 15th century.

  • Neck Warmer: Unbutton it and wear the gorget alone with the hood bundled or tucked.

  • Sizing: We base sizing on head circumference and shoulder width for a correct, non-restrictive fit.

  • Care: Spot clean or gentle hand wash in cool water with a mild wool soap. Lay flat to dry. Due to the fulled nature of the wool, it is naturally resistant to dirt and odors.
