The broke back seax form appears across Anglo-Scandinavian assemblages from the 7th century onward, documented at sites including the Coppergate excavations in York, c. 850 to 1100 AD. This piece is built from historical materials in that tradition.
The blade is a three-layer sanmai construction with wrought iron cladding over a 1075 high carbon steel core. The wrought iron grain shows through on the flats after etching, giving the blade a surface no two pieces will share.
